Hi Sophie, yes I’m sure it will happen in the future. It’s just a question of technology and finance. If we really wanted then we could set up a moon base now. But it would be as expensive to do it with the current technology. But maybe in your lifetime it will happen…..I hope so. Mars will probably take several lifetimes to become feasible.

Yeah, I think that’s not a big problem. It’s not much different from living in a submarine. Bring your own power, air, supplies and so on, and you are good to go. We may have to work a bit more on technology to go to places such as Mars, but for example establishing a permanent base on the Moon is probably not a big deal anymore – except that it would cost a huuuuge amount of money, and we don’t really need to do it, so we don’t.
Of course living on *some* planets, such as the gas giants Jupiter, Saturn and so on, may be a bit more difficult because you’d essentially have to be floating around them rather than have some solid ground to settle onto.

Yes, definitely! To live on the moon or mars you need to create an enclosed space with enough air pressure and oxygen to keep humans alive. You also need to keep it constantly supplied. Whilst no easy task, those are just technical challenges that, I’m sure, will be overcome someday.

One interesting idea is how to terraform Mars so that humans can freely walk around on the surface, like on Earth. Theoretically, there’s enough carbon dioxide frozen in the martian poles, that if you could boil it all you would create an atmosphere whose pressure is similar to Earth’s. It would also increase the temperature to an Earth-like level. Artificial global warming on Mars! Getting Oxygen would still be a problem though…
