As usual, there are a few realistic sides, and a few less realistic sides to it. Even though I am a scientist, I tend to overlook minor such flaws in movies, because if I didn’t there would hardly be any movie left to enjoy! 🙂
So, I am really not the best person to ask this particular question, but I know who you could ask instead. Garrett Reisman, an actual astronaut who has done space walks before (and, as he says, almost got hit by space debris once), wrote a very interesting and partially funny review of “gravity” here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2013/10/17/what-does-a-real-astronaut-think-of-gravity/
Looks like the message is that the movie is pretty accurate on the technology, but does take its liberties with science. 🙂
