Well being a scientist is like having someone to pay you to do your hobby. So if I wasn’t a scientist I would find a job related to my other hobbies. Let’s see….ok I love playing guitar, so there you are, playing my guitar in a rock band.
When I left school, I was thinking of becoming a professional soldier instead of a scientist, because I thought that defending Europe’s freedom would be a worthy thing to do. In retrospect it was definitely a better decision to become a scientist. If I think about alternatives now, my best backup plan if I ever have to leave science would be to establish a company that does high tech house control and monitoring equipment, such as computer controlled power outlets and lighting and so on, to optimize energy saving. It’s kind of a hobby of mine, and I am trying to turn my own house into accommodation suitable for the 21st century this way, so I might just as well do it for other people too.
